THE ROLE OF FAMILY INSTITUTIONS IN DA’WAH
Family, regardless of how one defines it, has always been the first home, the first school and the first terminal where every human being started his journey of life. The term family, sometimes extends to as far as friends, roommates and coworkers, but commonly known to consists of one’s parent, spouse and children. Apparently, the role that every member in the family plays contributes largely in shaping the habit, attitude and worldview of the entire family. Islam has projected the role of parents and how they naturally become the main source and predictors of their children’s faith and believe (at least before the age of maturity).
Hence, if Da’wah means inviting people to a noble course, then the family institution is the first place that should invite its members to the noble message of Islam. Like any other reputable institution, this institution should have specific goals, objectives, vision and mission, this institution should ensure not just the enrollment of every member within the family, but also design a curriculum that will enable the members to become a valuable asset to the community, members that will grow from the garden of iman and taqwa, and live a life that is pleasing to Allah,
With the current challenges threatening a success and blissful growth of family institutions in our Muslim communities, which can be seen in the form of breaking homes, divorce rate, child abuse and disrespecting parents, upholding Islamic teachings in our family institutions would save us much of these unfortunate phenomena. Islam thought us to build our homes on the foundation of iman and taqwa not fashion and unrealistic ambitions, our children should take examples from Rasulullah صلى الله عليه وسلم and his companions رضي الله عنهم not Shaitan and his celebrities, Parent must be a source of joy and inspiration not a dustbin where we dump our anger, rage and frustration.
In nutshell, I believe if family institutions played their roles in nurturing a sound individual with iman and taqwa lightening his path, we would have a very dynamic community that would contribute significantly in building an exemplary nation. والله اعلم
